Reliquary of the Holy Nail

The reliquary of the sacred nail contains a fragment of the Holy Nail, which according to religious tradition would have been used during the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. These fragments arrived in the West as munificent gifts from the emperor or were traded. Originally these relics must have been for personal use and only later became objects of public veneration. The reliquary is made of gilded silver, enriched with precious enamels; it contains two rock crystal cups likely of Venetian manufacture.
