Agostino Novello hands the robe to the rector

The scene painted by Priamo della Quercia takes place beneath the three-arched loggia, which offers a view of the Cathedral façade in the background. In the center, an Augustinian friar presents the cloak to Blessed Angelico Novello, who is receiving the Augustinian habit. Beside them, a deacon and several canons are reading a document. Another group of people is witnessing the scene, including a figure with a long beard, identified as Emperor John VIII Palaiologos. The setting may refer to Pope Eugene IV's visit to Siena in 1443. In the foreground, on the Cathedral steps, various figures are depicted, including beggars, to symbolize acts of mercy. The scene is framed by a decorated arch, with Adam and Eve in the lower niches, referring to original sin, and the Balzana waving above the niche. The figure of Eve may be the work of Domenico di Bartolo.
