The Pope grants the indulgence

The scene takes place in a large portico; in the background a hexagonal building and a two-tone marble structure are visible, while the inlaid floor recalls the interior of the Siena Cathedral. At the sides of the portico are figures pointing toward the main scene. The arch framing the narrative presents two male figures in Eastern dress, one of whom could refer to the Eastern emperor John VII Palaiologos, while the other, wearing a turban, could allude to the African delegations present at the Council of Ferrara-Florence. The interpretation of the fresco is supported by the parchment held by the pope, dated 25 March 1443 and a reference to salma 110. The seated pope, identified as Eugene IV, is handing the parchment to the rector of the hospital, Carlo d’Agnolino Bartoli, kneeling before him. Although the caption refers to grants of the hospital dating back to 1193, the scene presents numerous attempts to identify contemporary historical figures, including a young man dressed in a damask guarnacca with a ferret at his neck, next to two men kneeling. A fawn is crouched on the ground.
