The museums of Siena offer a multilingual and accessible app, multimedia supports, and special seating to ensure inclusive visits for all.
Inclusive Museum: An Accessible Offer for Everyone
The Santa Maria della Scala, together with the Municipality of Siena, has taken an important step towards inclusivity by making the museum experience more accessible through an innovative project involving the main museums in the city: the Museo Civico, the Santa Maria della Scala, and the Museo dell'Acqua.
Thanks to a funding of 320,100.00 Euros received in 2022 through the "NextGenerationEU" initiative and the Ministry of Culture, a new multifunctional app has been developed to make museum visits even more accessible. Available in Italian, English, French, German, and Italian Sign Language, the app offers various modes of use, such as text reading and listening, accompanied by in-depth information and a rich iconographic display.
An App Designed for Everyone
The new app is not just a simple guide tool, but a real aid to the visit. The geo-referenced floor plans have been designed to help visitors easily navigate the various museum spaces, with indications on connections, services (such as restrooms, cafeterias, bookshops), and the accessibility of each area (e.g., elevators, stairs). Additionally, the app is available in both Web-App and Offline versions for Apple and Android devices, and can be downloaded for free from the Apple Store and Google Play.
Multimedia Supports and Accessible Seating
To further enhance the visitor experience, the museums have strengthened the multimedia support offerings: tablets, smartphone chargers, and disposable headphones have been purchased for visitors' use. Moreover, 'accessible' seating with special features, such as locking wheels and supports to assist with standing up, have been installed. Wheelchairs are also available free of charge for visitors with mobility disabilities.
A Comprehensive Vision of Inclusivity
Inclusivity goes beyond technological tools: a plan has been designed to improve digital accessibility, with the enhancement of Wi-Fi coverage at Santa Maria della Scala and the upcoming reorganization of the museum websites according to advanced accessibility criteria. These changes are intended to ensure that everyone, regardless of their needs, can fully enjoy the beauty and culture offered by the museums of Siena.
A Key Project for the Community
The "Inclusive Museums of Siena" project is an important step towards a truly accessible culture, showing how art and history can be shared without physical, cognitive, and sensory barriers. With the participation of professionals and continuous attention to visitors' needs, the Municipality of Siena is helping to create a museum environment that welcomes everyone, bringing art and culture closer to all.
The museum provides, upon request, free loan of iPads to visit the museum through the app.
