History and mission

For several years, the Educational Services have offered museum visits and workshop activities within the Santa Maria della Scala, open to individuals and local associations operating in the third sector and in the field of disability. The theme of accessibility has become an increasingly central and significant aspect in the museum field, in its various forms: not only those related to physical and logistical aspects (e.g., architectural and sensory barriers), but also those concerning economic and cognitive accessibility.

The cultural and educational offer of Accessibility is divided into the sections Museums and Alzheimer's, Museums, art and autism and Museum for all, three project lines that, for several years, have been followed by the trained staff of the Educational Services of Santa Maria della Scala. These accessibility paths are aimed at families, associations and social cooperatives. Participants can be prepared for the visit with preparatory material, produced and provided by the educational services, such as, among others, social stories and/or cards written with Augmentative Alternative Communication (A.A.), so as to improve and facilitate the visit experience and knowledge of the "Museum" space. The Santa Maria della Scala museum complex is also part of the Tuscan Alzheimer Museums project and operational network (to learn more visit the website www.museitoscanialzheimer.org).
