The Christ, Lorenzo di Pietro known as il Vecchietta

In 1476, Lorenzo di Pietro, known as il Vecchietta, asked the rector and the chapter of the hospital for permission to build a walled and whitewashed chapel inside the church, where he could be buried and place one of his last works, the bronze Christ. The bronze statue depicts Christ in the act of crushing the serpent at His feet, His body, covered only by a loincloth on His hips, with visible wounds and swollen veins, revealing a state of suffering; He wears the crown of thorns and holds the cross, devoid of its banner, in His left hand. The image has been interpreted as a representation of Christ the Redeemer.
