Alms

The fresco documents an important aspect of hospital history, focusing on the practice of limosina, the charitable function of the hospital. The scene is set inside a church, with various historical and architectural references, such as views of the bishop’s palace and the Cathedral. The fresco highlights specific hospital practices, such as the weekly distribution of bread to the poor and the limosina del pane rotto (the alms of broken bread) given to the needy. Among the figures depicted are pilgrims, mothers with children, and the sick, including a friar distributing bread. The scene also includes noble figures, such as one individual whom some scholars identify as Emperor Sigismund, who is being received with deference by the hospital rector. The fresco portrays not only the daily operations of the hospital, but also the humanity and dignity of its beneficiaries.
