The so-called 'Corticella' is a true hub of hospital pathways, positioned at the intermediate level between Piazza Duomo and the areas at the level of Piazzetta della Selva. This function was already fulfilled in ancient times, considering that here the 'internal road' (that is, the public road incorporated into the hospital and transformed into a genuine internal connecting route) intersected with the path descending from Piazza Duomo through Porta dei Vetturali. The hospital bakery was likely located here, and the spaces around the courtyard were used as lodging places for pilgrims when the wards on the upper floor were insufficient.
