The alms of the corticella (Distribution of alms)
The scene takes place in a large porticoed hall with a vaulted ceiling, inside a medieval hospital. Although the exact location is uncertain, it is hypothesized that the scene occurs in the 14th-century corticella, an area designated for housing the poor and children. The fresco depicts several figures: a steward giving instructions to a young attendant, a friar welcoming a poor man, and two elegantly dressed figures observing the scene. The representation refers to hospital-related practices, such as the distribution of meals to the poor, an obligatory act according to the hospital statutes of 1305. The hospital organized meals for the poor and also provided food to nobles fallen into poverty. Thus, the corticella was a multifunctional space, used both for food distribution and for entrusting children to pilgrims.
