Agostino Novello gives the habit to the rector

The scene painted by Priamo della Quercia takes place beneath a three-arched loggia, offering a view of the Cathedral façade in the background. At the center, an Augustinian friar presents the cloak to Blessed Angelico Novello, who is receiving the Augustinian habit. Beside them, a deacon and several canons are reading a document. Another group of people is witnessing the scene, including a figure with a long beard, identified as Emperor John VIII Palaiologos. The setting may allude to the visit of Pope Eugene IV to Siena in 1443. In the foreground, on the steps of the Cathedral, various figures are depicted, including beggars, symbolizing acts of mercy. The scene is framed by a decorated arch, with Adam and Eve in the lower niches, referencing original sin, and the Balzana (the black-and-white coat of arms of Siena) waving above the niche. The figure of Eve may be the work of Domenico di Bartolo.
