Rilievo delle ‘Muse Chigi’
Raffinato rilievo marmoreo, probabile fronte di un piccolo sarcofago, che presenta tredici figure ispirate a modelli greci del IV secolo a.C. Secondo una recente interpretazione, la scena raffigurerebbe l’accoglienza della poetessa Saffo (la figura seduta al centro) sul monte Elicona, circondata dalle muse e accompagnata dalle figure di Ermes e Orfeo con la cetra. Il pezzo conserva l’armonia delle proporzioni classiche.
Curiosità: Già parte delle collezioni romane dei Chigi nel XVII secolo, il rilievo fu trasportato nei pressi di Siena nel 1683 e murato in una parete della Villa de Centinale. E’ rimasto incastonato della struttura della villa come prezioso arredo fino al suo acquisto da parte dello Stato nel 1970.
