Tito Sarrocchi was commissioned to create a copy of the Fonte Gaia by Jacopo della Quercia, which had been severely damaged, between 1858 and 1861. The sculpture represents the virtue of temperance and is a plaster replica that follows Jacopo della Quercia’s original model. The artist's task was to reinvent the missing parts of the sculpture and replicate identically the preserved ones. The new Fonte Gaia was completed in 1868 and was placed in the "Campo" one year later.
