Grave goods from Tomb III of Marcianella
Grave discovered near the locality of Marcianella in Chiusi, dating to the end of the 7th century B.C. It displays all the characteristics typical of female burials of the Orientalizing period: a spindle-whorl and a bobbin identify the woman as a weaver and spinner, while the amber bead represents a distinctive element, as it is fairly rare in the Chiusi area. The canopic consists of the ossuary and a head-shaped lid. The ossuary is ovoidal and the vertical handles fall onto its body taking the shape of a hand; on the lid, however, the anatomical details are rendered in relief, all except the chin and the hair: this absence is typical of female canopi. The amber bead seems to pertain to a type of fibula covered with amber beads. Amber was imported into Etruria from the Baltic Sea via Verucchio: brooches of this kind were widespread in Verucchio from the end of the 8th century B.C.
