Giving young women away in marriage
The fresco depicts life inside a hospital, particularly the section dedicated to children and women. The scene is symbolically divided by a basin and arches that separate two areas: on the left, a courtyard showing the activities of wet nurses, women, nuns, and attendants engaged in various tasks related to child care, while a teacher leads some students, including a young girl. The scene also includes biblical references and depicts daily activities such as washing children and education. On the right, a wedding is being celebrated in a chapel, with the rector acting as witness holding the bride’s dowry. The conclusion of the ceremony is accompanied by music played by young women. Overall, the fresco illustrates the organization of the hospital and the statutory rules governing its activities, with echoes of the sermons of Saint Bernardino.
