The Santa Maria della Scala museum complex, in collaboration with the Società di Esecutori di Pie Disposizioni in Siena - E.T.S., offers a series of visits, curated by Laura Martini and Raffaele Marrone, dedicated to the discovery of the fresco cycle of the Thebaid, recently restored and returned to the public. The appointments are scheduled on Saturday 21 March, 18 April and 6 June at 11:00 .
Because of the rarity of the subject and the extraordinary technical quality of the scenes, these frescoes by Lippo Vanni represent an absolute masterpiece of 14th-century Sienese art and one of the most important rediscoveries of recent decades.
The recent conservation intervention has restored full legibility to an important pictorial complex that decorates the entrance room of the ancient Compagnia dei Disciplinati, now the historic headquarters of the Società di Esecutori di Pie Disposizioni, which promoted and carried out the restoration.
The guided tours will provide an opportunity to delve into the history of the frescoes' rediscovery and the different phases of the recent restoration intervention.
