Information

The exhibition is free to enter and follows the museum’s opening hours.

From June 12 to September 7, 2025, the Santa Maria della Scala museum complex hosts Golgotha | On Portraying a Mountain, a solo exhibition by Francesco Carone. This sculptural installation reflects on the theme of Golgotha, not merely as the site of the Passion, but as an opportunity to explore the concept of the mountain through the language of sculpture.

For years, Francesco Carone has investigated the themes of museums and the relationship between artwork and display. In this installation, the artist presents a selection from his personal collection of ancient representations of Golgotha, reinterpreted from a new perspective. The exhibition’s minimalist setup invites visitors to engage with these small devotional objects, stripped of the crucifix, and reimagined within a secular symbolism where the ascent becomes a path of knowledge and openness to mystery, and the mountain transforms into an inner landscape of elevation.

The exhibition is part of the Raggioverde 2025 program, curated by Michelina Eremita, which this year explores the theme of landscape through a dialogue between art, science, nature, memory, and transformation. The invited artists—Francesco Carone, Pierluigi Pusole, Concetta Modica, Cristina Gozzini, Eugenia Vanni, and Sophie Ko—present their works across six significant city venues: the Santa Maria della Scala Museum Complex, the Civic Museum, the Fondazione Conservatori Riuniti, the Accademia dei Fisiocritici, and the Botanical Garden.
