The Walk ('Passeggio')

The vast, well-lit chamber known as The Walk that prolongs the Pilgrims' Hall and stands adjacent to the Chapel of the Mantle served for centuries as the hospital's meeting place leading into the chapel. Built as a "new wing of the Pilgrims' Hall" in 1378, it is depicted with its 15th century wooden ceiling in Domenico di Bartolo's fresco entitled Caring for the Sick. The cross-vaulted ceiling was probably installed in the early 16th century, while the doors providing access to the various rooms looking onto it were opened in the 17th century. The Walk now houses major sculptural groups from monuments around the city.
