St. Pius'Ward

Originally known as the "Valle Piatta" Pilgrims' Hall, St. Pius' Ward was in use as the hospital infirmary until 1975. The right-hand wall has a 15th century fresco depicting two episodes from the life of the Blessed Giovanni Colombini from Siena. The ward is now used as a picture gallery with paintings chiefly from convents, oratories and churches belonging to religious orders suppressed under Napoleon or after the Unification of Italy. The room also has two major 19th century Sienese academic works: The Last Hours of Siena's Freedom (1882) and the unfinished Nero Watches While Rome Burns by Pietro Aldi (1852–88). The ward is used also for temporary exhibitions, events and seminars.
