Old Sacristy

The Old Sacristy, known as the Chapel of the Holy Nail, opens up to the right of the Church of the SS. Annunziata. The chapel was restructured in the 1440s to house the precious relics purchased by the hospital in 1359 and kept in the Chapel of the Mantle until then. Both the area as a whole and the Reliquary, the cupboard designed to hold the relics (currently on permanent loan to the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena), were painted by Lorenzo di Pietro, known as Vecchietta, between 1445 and 1449. The extremely complex and intriguing iconographical programme on the walls and ceiling focuses on the Christological cycle and illustrates the Articles of the Creed with references to both the Old and New Testaments. The fresco depicting the Madonna of the Mantle, painted by Domenico di Bartolo for the Chapel of the Mantle in 1444 but subsequently removed to make way for a door, was placed under the late 15th century marble canopy in 1610.
